Do rental cars track your speed?

No, Redspot rental cars do not track your speed or monitor general activity in our cars to respect your privacy. That said, take it easy on the pedal! 

If you get a speeding ticket or a fine in one of our vehicles, we won’t be able to pay the fee ourselves. In this case, we will email the bill to you and charge a $55 admin fee. Ultimately, it’s easier to drive within the speed limit and adhere to local road rules to make your journey as hassle-free as possible.

What are the rules for renting a car in Australia?

Whether you’re gearing up for adventure in Perth or beyond, Aussie car rental comes with a few requirements before you get driving. To rent a car in Australia, you must: 

  • Be over 21 years old
  • Present a valid credit/debit card OR purchase order OR prepaid voucher in the renter’s name
  • Present a valid, physical driver’s licence in the renter’s name. Note: Digital licences, photos or copies are not accepted
  • Present valid driver’s licence/s for any additional drivers, who must be present at the time of vehicle pick-up

Coming from overseas? International visitors must also present a physical passport and a valid, full driver’s licence at vehicle pick-up. 

Make sure to bring an official translation of your driving licence if it is not in English! You may request translation documents from your country’s embassy or local traffic authority.

Can I rent a car in Australia as a tourist?

Yes, tourists are more than welcome to rent a car in Perth! Temporary visitors can show their valid overseas driver’s licence and passport to rent vehicles from Redspot.

Staying in Australia for longer than 3 months? In this case, you’ll need to transition to a local driver’s licence. This depends on the state or territory you’re travelling in, so check in with our friendly Perth City team for local advice. 

Note: Make sure to bring a physical driver’s licence to the kiosk. Digital licences or passports are not accepted as valid documents.

If your licence is not in English, we’ll need a translated version from your embassy or traffic authority in your home country.

How close to full does rental car need to be?

For rental car pick-up, your vehicle comes with a full tank of fuel so you can get rolling ASAP! For returns, you have a few refuelling choices on hand. Fuel options include: 

  1. Prepay for a full tank at a discounted rate at the start of your rental period. This will save you the hassle of filling it up later, just note that there’s no refund for unused fuel.  
  2. Only get charged for the fuel you use. This is available at a higher rate than prepayment. 

Refuel your rental vehicle before returning it. Please fill the vehicle right before returning to avoid extra charges.

Is it easy to drive in Perth?

Driving in Perth is safe and easy to navigate, with wide roads, little traffic and generally high visibility. As in other Australian cities, you must follow the local road rules. However, Perth’s driveability makes road adventures a popular pastime for locals and visitors alike!

Do rental cars film you?

Some rental cars may have a dashcam or rearview camera installed for safety reasons. Here at Redspot, we value full transparency. That’s why we’ll be sure to tell you whether your vehicle is equipped with either camera in the rental agreement. 

No Redspot car has internal cameras to film you during your rental period. Your privacy is important to us, so you can drive assured that you can roam freely with peace of mind!

Do rental cars have a km limit?

For maximum freedom, there are no kilometre (km) limitations for standard passenger and leisure Redspot vehicles around Australia! However, if you rent a van, truck or ute for commercial purposes, please note that your contract may have kilometre restrictions involved.

Is it better to prepay for a rental car?

Generally speaking, yes! Prepaying for your rental car means you are more likely to snap up the best hire rate for your plans. You also have a much better chance of securing the type of vehicle you want. 

If you plan on travelling during holiday seasons like Christmas or New Year, prepaying is the best way to ensure your journey can go off without a hitch.

What documents do I need to hire a car in Australia?

To hire a car in Australia with Redspot, all you need is:

  • A valid credit card, debit card or purchase order/prepaid voucher.
  • A valid driver’s licence and the licence of any other drivers using the car. Licence not in English? You will also need an official translation, as provided by your embassy or home nation’s traffic authority. 
  • Does your licence show your current address? If not, you will need to provide documented proof of address, such as a utility bill. 

If you are not an Australian citizen, you must also provide your passport.

How can I avoid rental car cancellation fees?

Booking a rental car with Redspot? You don’t have to worry about cancellation fees, because we don’t charge any! We know that life happens when you least expect it and how important flexibility is on the road.

Do I need a credit card to rent a car with Redspot?

No credit card, no problem. We’re one of the rare Aussie rental car companies that don’t require credit card payment to book with us! 

Instead, you can pay using a valid debit card and/or purchase order or prepaid voucher. We understand that flexibility is key, so we offer alternative payment options to get you rolling ASAP.

Do I have to pay a bond to rent a Redspot car?

Yes, you will need to pay a bond to rent with Redspot, just the same as you would with any other Aussie car rental company. The exact bond amount will depend on your booking plan and vehicle criteria. With Redspot, this typically ranges between $100-$1000. 

Provided there are no additional charges at the end of your rental, this bond will be returned to the same card you paid with. If there are any additional charges (damages, late returns etc.), these may be deducted from the bond before it’s refunded. 

After your rental car is returned safe and sound, the bond is usually released within 3-5 business days. This may vary depending on your bank or debit/credit card provider.

Do you offer one-way car hires at Redspot?

We sure do! Redspot offers one-way car hires (also known as vehicle relocations) from our Perth City branch. Wherever you want to wrap up your stay, we’re happy to accommodate! Chat with our friendly team at (08) 6182 1500 or 1300 668 810 to discuss options.

Can P Platers hire cars?

Yes, you sure can! We’re one of the few Aussie companies that give the green light for local P-platers over 21 to rent a car. 

Keeping you safe is our top priority, so we have a few safety rules that are designed to make sure you get from Point A to Point B without a hitch. 

If you are a P-plater, you must:

  • Hold a Provisional P2 licence (green Ps).
  • Hold a driver’s licence that is valid for a minimum of 12 months from the date of rental collection.

When you rent a car, remember to factor in the daily surcharge. This surcharge applies to all drivers holding an Australian provisional driver’s licence. Keep in mind that P-platers can also reduce damage cover to a maximum of $330. 

Aged between 21 and 25? You have access to our range of small to medium-sized sedans and hatchbacks. Provisional drivers over the age of 25 can enjoy renting any vehicle available from our entire fleet.

What is the minimum age to rent a car in Perth?

With most Aussie rental companies? The minimum age to rent a car in Australia is 25, but at Redspot we don’t think age should keep you from getting out there! Drivers from 21 years old are welcome to rent with us.

Please be advised that there will be a few restrictions for young drivers. Hired cars available will be CDAR, ECAR and IDAR class vehicles. Provisional P2 licence holders can reduce damage cover up to $330, and there will be a small daily surcharge. Check our Young Drivers guide for all the details.

What is the oldest age to drive a rental car?

None! At Redspot, we say that age is just a number. That’s why we welcome anyone over 21 years old to rent with us. For those young at heart, jump behind the wheel and get ready to explore all the beauty Australia has to offer!

Can I extend my car rental period?

Yes, you can extend your car rental period and spend more quality time on the road, no problem! Simply call the Redspot branch where you hired your vehicle or 1300 668 810 (toll-free number) to update your plans, subject to vehicle availability. 

Do keep in mind that extensions will influence your rental rate. Our team will be happy to confirm your final rental fees before you continue your journey.

Can I vape or smoke in a rental car?

No, most Aussie rental cars run a smoke-free fleet, including Redspot! Vaping and smoking are best done outside and away from your rental car. This helps you avoid any extra cleaning fees you may be charged if your car rental smells like vape/smoke upon returning it.

Do you have to clean a hire car before returning?

At Redspot, we clean your hire car after every rental so you don’t have to! Simply return your rental car to the way you found it – remember to throw any rubbish and take your belongings with you. 

We vacuum and clean all Redspot car interiors including seats, floors, dashboard, steering wheel and internal windows. Car exteriors aren’t forgotten either – we wash and dry them so your rental car sparkles like a million bucks.

If your rental car requires intensive cleaning (beyond the service mentioned above) or steam cleaning, we may need to charge a cleaning fee. Speak to our staff for more info!

Do you get petrol when you hire a car?

When you hire a car at Redspot, your car’s tank should already be full. No need to run on fumes!

Do rental cars have GPS or sat nav systems?

Unfortunately, Redspot cars do not come with GPS or satellite navigation (sat nav) systems. If you need navigational help though, never fear! 

Most Redspot cars are equipped with Android Auto or Apple CarPlay, which allows hands-free navigation. This helps keep you safe while driving – we don’t recommend using your mobile phone for navigation otherwise. 

Bring along a USB or USB-C connector to use the location services available in-car facilities. We do not provide mobile phone connectors, so it’s best to come prepared in case you’d like to make full use of these services.

I just got a punctured tyre, will it cost me to call out the roadside assistance to change the tyre?

With Redspot’s Premium Roadside Assistance (PRA) OR Super Collision Damage Waiver (SCDW) changing a punctured tyre will be included in your package at no extra cost! Your rental car also comes with a tool kit to change the tyre yourself if you want to get up and running ASAP. 

PRA covers the cost of call-out requests with Royal Automobile Club of Queensland (RACQ) insurance or similar. Alternatively, one of our friendly Redspot staff members will come to assist you. This is also covered by PRA. 

If you are stuck in a particularly remote location, Redspot also offers a $150 reimbursement credit. This helps cover any local accommodation and transport you might need during a worst-case scenario. 

Note: If your vehicle breaks down due to no fault of your own (engine faults etc.), you are not liable for any call-out fees etc. This applies even if you did not take Premium Roadside Assistance.
