Can I hire a car on my P-plates?
With Redspot, you absolutely can! We’re always happy to offer provisional licence holders the opportunity to travel around Australia. We believe that once you can drive on your own, you should be able to rent a car, too.
Whether you’re keen on a road trip with mates or need a vehicle for a local errand run, we’re here to make your journey as smooth as possible.
If you are a P-plater, there are just a few simple conditions to be aware of when you hire a vehicle with us:
- You must hold a valid Australian P2 (green P-plates) Provisional Driver Licence. It must be valid for a minimum of 1 year from the date of rental collection. It must also have been valid for a minimum of 12 consecutive months.
- Overseas licence holders must hold a full licence.
- Factor in our daily surcharge for P-platers.
- You must be at least 21 years old. If you are under 25 years old, you’ll need to pay our Young Driver daily fee.
- The maximum damage cover reduction for P-platers is $330.
- Drivers between the ages of 21 and 25 can rent our range of small to medium-sized sedans and hatchbacks. If you’re over 25 years old with a Provisional Driver’s Licence, you can hit the road with any available vehicle in our fleet!
- Redspot vehicles cannot be rented or driven by learner drivers.
When hiring a Redspot vehicle with your provisional driver’s licence, all the restrictions of your licence apply. This includes the size of vehicles you can drive, the maximum speed you can travel and your blood alcohol content (BAC) level.
You will also need to make sure you display your P-plates according to the laws of whatever state you’re driving in. The exact rules can vary, but the key is to make sure your P-plates are clearly visible when looking at the front and rear of your vehicle.

Spot-on tips for P-plate car renters
Ready to hit the road for an epic P-plate road trip? Here are some top tips to keep in mind:
- Reserve a familiar vehicle: In Redspot’s range, you should be able to find a vehicle similar to one you’ve driven before. Choose a car like this to make adjusting to a new ride that much easier!
- Check your ride before taking off: Before setting off on the road trip of a lifetime, make sure you examine your tyres, lights, indicators, brakes, windscreen wipers and the overall condition of your vehicle. If you’re unsure about anything, make sure to let your rental team know so you can head off with confidence.
- Get a handle on insurance: When booking a vehicle, it’s important to have a strong understanding of your insurance policy and coverage. Remember to keep in mind any special considerations that may apply to P-platers.
- Designated drivers: If you’re travelling in a group, make sure you know who will be taking on the responsibility of driving. For Redspot customers, it’s best to keep your drivers to a minimum, as any additional drivers will incur additional flat fees per day.
- Go for pre-paid fuel: Redspot offers a number of different refuelling options for maximum convenience. We recommend choosing to prepay for your fuel. With this option, you pay the cost of a full tank of petrol at the start of your rental. That means no hassle trying to find a petrol station near the car rental branch.
- Plan your trip: When it comes to the perfect road trip, it’s a great idea to plan ahead of time. Make sure you know where you’re heading each day of your trip. This will help to ensure you have your accommodation and refuelling locations sorted and avoid any nasty surprises.
- Keep your car clean and smoke-free: It’s important to keep your vehicle clean so you don’t incur any cleaning fees upon returning your vehicle. Redspot, like many Australian car rental companies, doesn’t allow for smoking or vaping in our vehicles. Make sure you and your passengers stick to this rule to avoid an extra cleaning fee.
- Understand road rules: Before setting out, have a flick through your learner manual to refresh your memory on Australian road rules. If you’re travelling interstate, brush up on road rules and signs for where you’re travelling.
- Minimise distractions: Distractions cause car accidents, so make sure you minimise them as much as possible. Make sure your passengers are on their best behaviour, and keep in mind that in some states, provisional drivers are not allowed to use their phones in any capacity.
- Watch out for weather: Keep an eye on the weather forecast and try to avoid driving during events like heavy rainfall, hail or snow.
- Grab a toll pass waiver: Save yourself the pain of studying a map while looking for a toll-free route. Redspot’s Toll Pass Waiver is a simple daily fee that covers you for travel on any toll road in Australia. Easy!
- Know your roadside assistance policy: Your car rental likely comes with some kind of roadside assistance policy, such as Redspot’s Standard Package or All-Inclusive Package. Make sure you know what your policy covers you for and how to get assistance when you need it.
- Pick-up and drop-off: Check out the hours of your car rental branch ahead of time. This will make it easy for you to plan your vehicle pick-up and drop-off!

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the minimum age to rent a car in Australia?
Redspot is one of a small number of car rental companies in Australia that allows customers as young as 21 to rent vehicles. If you’re under 21, you’re unlikely to have much luck trying to rent a car in Australia.
Can I rent a car with a debit card in Australia?
Yes, Redspot allows customers to rent vehicles with a debit card rather than a credit card. Simply present a valid debit card when hiring your car alongside your valid driver’s licence.
You can also pay for your vehicle purchase order or prepaid voucher. Of course, you can also present a valid credit card when picking up your car.
Can you vape in a rental car?
Redspot, like just about every other car rental company in Australia, does not allow customers to vape in our vehicles. Any vaping and smoking should be done far away from your rental vehicle to avoid incurring an extra cleaning fee.
Can learner drivers rent a car in Australia?
Learner drivers are not able to rent or drive rental vehicles with Redspot or just about any other car rental company in Australia.
