Red-hot tips for first-time car renters under 25
First-time taking the (rental) wheel? Check out these nifty tips to make sure your travels run like a well-oiled machine:
- Reserve a car type you’re accustomed to driving – you’ll feel more comfortable driving a car that’s similar to your own!
- Check your vehicle before driving off – Take a squiz at the tyres, lights, indicators, brakes, windscreen, wipers and overall condition of your car. Spot anything you’re a little unsure of? Let your car rental support team know so they can adjust and get you 100% confident on the road.
- Research your insurance options – what do your coverage options look like, and what suits your budget? What options can you choose to reduce any financial stress if an accident happens? Prepping your insurance helps get those wheels rolling, so you’re confident that your car rental company has your back – and your boot!
- Book your ride early – get miles ahead of the holiday rush and make sure you grab the car you want!
- Designate your driver/s – Travelling with a group? Choose one person to dedicate as your main driver for the entire trip – ideally someone who loves life behind the wheel! Any additional drivers are required to pay a flat fee per day, so arrange your hero driver/s before setting off.
- Pick up a toll pass waiver – this helps you navigate through Australia’s toll roads (in NSW, VIC and QLD) stress-free. Save on paying multiple toll fees with a single daily fee instead, using Redspot’s handy Toll Pass Waiver.
- Know your fuel policy – Pre-paying, post-paying or refuelling yourself? Check your fuel policy before you hit the road so your travels are covered.
- Opt for pre-paid fuel – No time to fill up your rental car before returning it? Skip the hassle by choosing Redspot’s pre-paid fuel option! Simply return your car to the rental location and the friendly support team can fill it up for you at a petrol price that’s comparable to local rates. Hot tip – ask about fuel prices of the day when you collect your rental car to get an idea of current pricing!
- Keep those fuel receipts – to avoid getting overcharged and make sure you pay exactly what’s needed.
- Check your route for petrol stations – note key checkpoints along your journey so you never run out of steam (or in this case, fuel!).
- Plan your pick up and drop off times – Check your car hire branch’s operating hours to make sure you can pick up and drop off vehicles, no sweat. Need help outside those times? Ask about their after hours policy so your adventures can run on your schedule!
- Don’t smoke or vape inside your rental car – Most Aussie rental companies run a smoke-free fleet and charge an extra cleaning fee if your car rental smells like smoke upon return. Dodge any extra hassle by keeping smoking outside and far away from your vehicle.
- Keep the car clean – Easily avoid any extra cleaning charges (if things get really dirty!) by keeping a designated rubbish bag in your rental car. Try to keep eating and drinking outside the vehicle and do one last ‘clean sweep’ before wrapping up your travels.
