What to know before you book a truck hire
Whether you’re a first-timer or a seasoned pro, there are plenty of things to consider when hiring a truck. Here are some handy rental tips to get your stuff where you need it:
- Bring a valid driver’s licence and credit card to book your next truck hire. All rental vehicles require a credit card at pick-up for a pre-authorisation. Planning on an additional driver/s? Bring their valid driver’s licences along too so you can share driving duties with no sweat.
- Minimum age and maximum age for truck hire – If you’re 21 years old or above, you can hire a truck with Redspot! However, if you’re over 75 we kindly ask for a medical certificate that gives you the all-clear (and peace of mind) to drive.
- Check what licence you’ll need to get your truck on the road! For example, our fleet of Hino 300 trucks is driveable on a Standard Car Licence (Class C). Other trucks may need an LR (Light Rigid), MR (Medium Rigid), HR (Heavy Rigid) or MC (Medium-Combination) truck licence to drive in Australia.
- Confirm the size of your move – this will help you choose the right truck size for your needs. Assess your belongings – how many cubic metres do these take up, and can your truck dimensions cover it? Trucks come in a range of sizes and cargo capacities. A small truck hire might suit you best, or maybe you’ll need to size up. Truck dimensions also help you know which parking spots you can get into and the height restrictions you might come across.
- Calculate truck hire costs by determining rental duration and extra fees. Truck hire cost is typically calculated by the number of days you are hiring it for. Extra services like one way rental involve additional fees for added flexibility, so plan accordingly. Keep costs down by hiring a truck large enough to transport all your belongings in fewer trips!
- Note the distance of your move – long-distance and interstate moves might call for a different transport plan compared to local trips.
- Choose trucks with an open or enclosed cargo space depending on your needs. Open cargo spaces, like a flat bed truck, are more suited for carrying large, unusually-shaped items that may not fit in a standard truck space. However, flat bed trucks offer less protection against weather and theft. Enclosed cargo spaces, like box trucks, provide more protection but may have limited access points for loading and unloading. Redspot currently offers a quality range of box trucks for your truck needs!
- Look for specialised removal truck features to keep your items safe and secure. This includes built-in tie-down points and padding to secure your belongings and prevent them from moving or breaking during transit.
- Ask for moving accessories or specialised storage options to make moving as stress-free as possible! A great truck hire company will offer packing equipment add-ons such as bubble wrap, packing tape, boxes and more to ensure your things get to the destination safely. This is especially helpful for transporting fragile items and appliances, like glassware and fridges.
- Prep your council parking permits – some areas might need a parking permit for your truck. Check your local government area and local council to see if you need permits, and sort this out in advance. This will make sure your move stays as stress-free as possible.
- Remember that trucks are taller than standard car hires – high wind areas can affect you more than usual. Drive slower to keep you and your belongings safe on the road!
